Classic Quilt Blocks have been sewn for centuries, are easy to recognise and are every quilters favorite. Let's celebrate these gorgeous blocks and add them to our quilting projects!
Welcome to the final week of my Shoo Fly Classic Quilt Blocks series. It's been a fun month looking at this cute block in more detail, sewing one together in my step by step tutorial and looking at layouts and variations. I hope you've fallen in love with this block and I've inspired you to plan a Shoo Fly quilt of your own.
I like to end each series with a fun project for you to try, and this month I've put together a Scrappy Shoo Fly Block variation that is fun to sew and something a little different for me.
Keeping the charm and shape of the original block was important to me, but I wanted to inject more colour and visual interest to create a block that's perfect for scrappy quilts.
I've always loved bright blocks on crisp white backgrounds, but lately I've falling in love with the scrappy low volume backgrounds and I wanted to give it a try. My low volume stash is small, so my goal for 2021 is to collect more and sew myself a super scrappy quilt.
It's difficult to see in a diagram, but this was my thought process and the look I was aiming for.
The scrappy blocks would still work perfectly on a crisp white background, or you could stick with the low volume background and revert the HST's back to a solid squares - have a play around and use my example as inspiration.
The low volume fabrics add extra warmth to the block, and I'm looking forward to using backgrounds like this more often - it feels homey and snuggly, doesn't it?
Grab your fabric bins and give this Scrappy Shoo Fly Block a try and let me know what you think.
I've drafted the Scrappy Shoo Fly block variation as a 9" (finished) block pattern, and it's free for you to use and adapt as you wish. I've included a colouring sheet so you can plan fabrics/colours prior to sewing, and diagrams and tips to make piecing easy and fun!

I'm doing it all again next month with a gorgeous new block, and this one is a treasure - you're going to love it! First post goes live on February 5 so stay tuned!
Happy quilting :)
Thankyou very much. I learn a lot about blocks in your blog. I'm still sewing the chatelaine, since 2015 I think. Too many proyects in my box, too many proyets for this slooooowly quilter that I am.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your family are fine and safe. A big hug.
That’s so great Agueda! I think samplers are meant to be sewn slowly. The blocks can be done whenever you feel like sewing. So glad you’re enjoying the blocks I share 😘
