I have a new fun quilt block pattern for you today, and I can't thank you enough for the love you've shown my new block collection in my Etsy shop. These blocks are perfect for seasonal or children's quilts or for those times when you feel like sewing a playful block.
I was looking for a plane block for my grandson and couldn't find anything I liked, so I designed my own Plane Quilt Block and it's a new personal favorite.
How adorable is this? You can almost hear the engines roaring across the bright blue sky!
Man has a long fascination with flying and while planes, helicopters and other aircraft are now simply part of our daily routines, the desire for personal flight is something completely different. It's a primal desire to spread our wings and take to the sky.
Throughout history, people have jumped off towers, cliffs and hills in pursuit of conquering the air, but it's not within our reach without the use of machines. This urge to fly has led to some of man's greatest achievements in flight, and perhaps one day that long held dream of taking to the skies unassisted may be possible.
How amazing would it be to simply spread our wings and fly?
The Plane Quilt Block is constructed using the foundation paper piecing method and this one is for the confident paper piecer who loves a challenge.
There are smaller pieces to paper piece and a few templates to join, but watching this block come alive in fabric was so fun! Take your time and enjoy the experience.

The Plane Quilt Block PDF Pattern includes step by step assembly instructions and full-sized templates for three block sizes - 8", 10" & 12" so you can print and sew without any fuss. I didn't include a 6" block for this one as the templates were tiny and too fiddly - I want you to enjoy sewing these blocks.
There's also a colouring sheet to help you plan your fabrics/colours prior to piecing your mini quilt.
I've also included any tips I feel are useful for constructing the block, and I've calculated the fabric requirements for the largest block size so you can choose your fabrics with piece of mind.
