Umbrella FPP Quilt Block PDF Pattern

Whimsical quilt blocks are playful and fun, and perfect for seasonal or children's quilts. I have a new quilt block design for you today and I hope it adds something special to your projects.

Morning lovely!

In 2024 I added a new section to my Etsy shop to include a range of whimsical and fun quilt blocks, and you have been showing them lots of love - thank you! They are perfect for seasonal or children's quilts or for those times when you feel like sewing a playful block.

Every design I add becomes my new favorite block ever, and the Umbrella Quilt Block has completely stolen my heart.

How adorable is this? Rainy days just got a whole lot sweeter, and I can almost smell that intoxicating scent of rain on dry earth (petrichor) as I jump in the puddles.

Last year I brought one of those collapsible umbrellas you can carry in your handbag. The large umbrella that lives in my car was perfect for keeping me and two kids dry on a wet day, but they're grown up now and I never take it with me when I'm shopping. I often found myself running back to the car in the rain - I'm old, why was I running? ;)

Tasmanian weather is so unpredictable. You can walk into a shopping centre on a lovely sunny day and come out to a wet, wild thunderstorm (unprotected if you leave your umbrella in the car like me).

The term umbrella originates from the latin word "umbra" meaning shade. They've been around for a very, very long time and although they're typically used for rain or sun, it was also common for royalty and the elite to use large decorative umbrellas as a status symbol.

Fun facts - one of the oldest umbrellas discovered is believed to be over 2000 years old and one of the most expensive umbrellas ever made is a $50,000 Swarovski crystal studded umbrella. Folding umbrellas were invented in 1928 and I'm very thankful for mine - I stay dry and I don't have to run anywhere.

The Umbrella Quilt Block is constructed using the foundation paper piecing method and this one is for the confident paper piecer who loves a challenge.

There are smaller pieces to paper piece, specifically in the handle, but watching this block come alive in fabric is so much fun! Take your time and enjoy the experience.

Knowledge of foundation paper piecing is essential and if you need a little help, you can follow any of my tutorials here:

I'm only an email away if you need some extra help with foundation paper piecing, so contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

The Umbrella Quilt Block PDF Pattern includes step by step assembly instructions and full-sized templates for two block sizes - 10" & 12" so you can print and sew without any fuss. I chose these two sizes because anything smaller made the templates teeny tiny and fiddly, and I want you to enjoy sewing these blocks.

There's also a colouring sheet to help you plan your fabrics/colours prior to piecing your mini quilt.

I've also included any tips I feel are useful for constructing the block, and I've calculated the fabric requirements for the largest block size so you can choose your fabrics with piece of mind.

Blocks like these remind me let go, have fun and play in the sewing room! I hope you enjoy sewing the
Umbrella Quilt Block and that it adds something whimsical and charming to your quilt.
