15 Handmade Mother's Day Gift Ideas That She's Definitely Going To Love

Spoil mum this Mother's Day with a handmade gift created straight from the heart.  A little time and a whole lot of love will make it a gift she will treasure forever!

There were posts going around Facebook last week, reminding dad's that this year children would not be making Mother's Day gifts in the classroom and they had X amount of days to shop! ;) So funny!

Some of my most treasured possessions are the ones the kids made me during school. I have beautiful artwork and cards, bookmarks, a paper dispenser, heartfelt poetry and cute ornaments all over the house that were made with chubby fingers, hidden under beds and given to me with such pride and love.

Handmade gifts are so special, and I thought I'd do a round-up of some wonderful ideas for your mum this Mother's Day. I have found a diverse range of projects for every type of mum, and I think she's going to love any of these gorgeous crafty creations!

1. The 20 Minute Makeup Bag:

The 20 minute Makeup Bag from Hello Creative Family is perfect way to store her essentials in her handbag. Simply choose two gorgeous fat quarters and away you go - the tutorial is incredibly detailed and easy to follow!

Mums love a pretty makeup bag for their lippie, and this one is so stylish and chic! She could also use it for simple first aid supplies or for her notebook and pen, so she's always organised on to go! Sew one in her favorite colours and fill it with some pretty supplies.

2. Charm Square Fabric Tray:

I've made quite a few of these Charm Square Fabric Trays from A Spoonful of Sugar and I love them. They have so many uses and look pretty wherever you sit them - even hubby has a couple in his train shed for his important train bits and pieces.

They are easy to make and you could add nail polish, hairclips, earrings etc. to complete the gift. They look great in the sewing room, bathroom or beside the bed and you can make a whole batch in pretty fabrics for mum to enjoy.

3. Triangle Clutch:

You can't go wrong with a simple clutch and this Triangle Clutch from My Golden Thimble is so elegant. It finishes at 9 1/2" x 5 3/4" and you can swap out the leather for any fabric you want (maybe the cork fabric that's so popular right now or some metallic linen).

Mum would love this for a day out with the girls, a date night with hubby or anytime she wants to feel put together and glamourous. The PDF pattern with tutorial is available for instant download from her shop.

4. Beehive Messy Bun Hat:

Let's be honest, every day since lockdown has been a messy bun day, right? I'm also in desperate need of recolouring my roots, so this Beehive Messy Bun Hat from Made With A Twist is just what this mum needs!

I love this simple pattern - the ribbed edge is very classic and there is a bow in the back (perfect for younger mums or teens) that you could omit if it's not your thing. It's made using chunky yarn so it's quick and easy to crochet, and perfect for covering up those greys until we can run to the salon again!

5. Crochet Eco Friendly Turquoise Spa Set:

Why not pamper mum with this Crochet Eco Friendly Turquoise Spa Set from Turquoise Delights UK? This gorgeous set includes a shower pouf, face scrubbies, washcloths and a soap saver bag, and the pattern set is available as an instant download in her Etsy shop.

Add some bath salts, bath bombs, body lotion or a scented candle and let mum relax and unwind in the comfort of her own bathroom - she needs it!

6. DIY Hostess Apron:

Make mum feel glamourous in the kitchen with this DIY Hostess Apron from Style Me Pretty. I love this! It has a vintage feel and a lovely drape, and I'd love a couple to bake in (might have to sew them myself though).

There's a diagram tutorial and templates to download, and it all looks quick, easy and fun!

7. Halfsies Pincushions:

For the sewing mums, I have a free pattern on the blog for these Halfsies Pincushions. These are super fun to make and there are three designs to choose from - or make all three!

I do not like sticking pins in pretty designs, so I designed these to have a place for pins on one side, keeping the block pattern stick free. Of course, you can stick the pins anywhere if you want, I'm just weird like that!

The patterns are free to download, and mum will love one of these beside her sewing machine or in her craft bag.

8. Fabric Gift Pouch:

The Fabric Gift Pouch from Handmadiya would be perfect for gifting jewellery, essential oils, crystals or small ornaments. There are lots of step by step photos in this tutorial, but no measurements unfortunately - I guess you could have a play around and make different sizes. Maybe start with 10" squares of fabric?

I love when the packaging is as sweet as the gift and this would be a delightful way to present a gift to mum this Mother's Day.

9. Mum/Mom Mug Rug:

Grab your scraps and the Mum/Mom Mug Rug Pattern from Patchsmith and sew her a whimsical mug rug for her desk or sewing space. This design is super cute, and the applique pieces are cut from strips using the quick fuse strip method.

The design has two spelling options Mum or Mom and the description says this project can be sewn in just an hour or two. Add a pretty mug, some home cooked muffins or cupcakes and make mum smile this Mother's Day.

10. Kitchen Herbs Cross Stitch Patterns:

For the garden loving mums, these Kitchen Herb Cross Stitch Patterns are so sweet. Frame them individually, use them to embellish tea towels, aprons or linen, or add them to a plant container as shown in the photo.

You could also choose one design for a zipper pouch and mum can store her seed packets inside. There are so many ways to use these pretty designs and the patterns are free to download.

11. Padded Headbands:

Padded headbands are all the rage, and the team at A Beautiful Mess have put together a tutorial to help you make your own. This would be a great gift for the new mum or the mum to be in your life.

They are super simple to make and you can get creative with the fabrics and embellishments, so they complement outfits from casual to fancy! The tutorial has step by step photos and you could whip up a few of these very quickly.

12. Quilted Wine Tote:

Don't forget, mum has been in lockdown with dad for quite some time now, so a glass of wine might be just what she needs ;) These Quilted Wine Totes from Needle and Spatula are a great way to gift a bottle of wine this Mother's Day, plus she'll look very stylish when BYO dinner parties or BBQ's are allowed again.

There is a very detailed tutorial for these totes on Kate's blog and make sure you bookmark this one for Christmas as well - it's a great gift idea!

13. Simple Lace Bookmark:

The Simple Lace Bookmark from Lacy Crochet is perfect for the book loving mum. You can never have too many bookmarks and this one is simple but oh so pretty. I think it needs a tassel, which would be easy to add, but it's also cute without.

It's a free pattern and an easy combination of three basic stitches. A crocheted bookmark with a new novel would make any mum happy.

14. Fabric Rosette:

This vintage style Fabric Rosette from The Decorated House will delight any mum. It can be added to scarves, hats, bags, cushions or add a brooch pin so mum can wear it on her favorite coat or sweater.

If you purchase store brought items for mum like ponchos or jackets, then add the brooch to give it that special touch. Such a pretty rosette with so many uses!

15. Quilt In A Day Quilt:

There are lots of quilt in a day patterns out there, but the Colour By Number quilt pattern from Sew She Can is one of my favorites. This quilt finishes at around 54" x 63" so it's a nice throw size for mum to snuggle under while she relaxes on Mother's Day.

Grab fourteen fat quarters and start sewing - your quilt top should be achievable in a day and then choose some simple quilting (crosshatching or stippling) and you'll have it wrapped and ready for mum in no time at all.

A great project for some pretty fabrics and mum's going to love it!

I hope these quick and easy gift ideas encourage you to create something handmade for mum this Mother's Day. Nothing says I love you more than a gift made with your own hands, and our wonderful mums deserve to feel special...every single day!

Happy crafting :)
