7 Day Mystery Sew Along- Day 5

Welcome back to Day 5 of my Mystery Sew Along.
Before we start, I'd like to answer a couple of yesterdays comments that were "no reply".  Firstly, welcome to the world Harvey Felix (gorgeous name, I love it). Congratulations Sue and family on the new arrival, so sweet. You are all very blessed, enjoy those cuddles ♥
Secondly, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to Trevea's three grandchildren (two boys 13 and 10 and one girl 10). Trevea, your comment made me cry! I'm beyond thrilled your grandchildren are sewing along with us. I'm very proud of all of you and it makes me so happy to know you are having fun and that you look forward to each installment. Kids, I really want to see a picture of your project when its done so be sure to send me one. I'll be waiting :) And I think all three of you are amazing xxx
I love how this little project has brought us all together, sewing and chatting ♥
OK, we are getting very close to the final reveal of this project, so lets get started. Today you need to pay close attention to all the photo's because the correct orientation of your units is important and we don't want to use those seam rippers, do we? ;)
Yesterdays "Homework Assignment" was the cutting requirements for Day 5 but if you didn't have time, here's a recap:
From your white fabric cut:

  • 8 x 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles
  • 8 x 2 1/2" squares
From your blue fabric cut:

  • 4 x 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips
  • 8 x 1 1/2" squares
Lets sew, and today we are starting with some more quick corners:
Step 1: On the wrong side of each of the eight blue 1 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner using a pencil or fine tipped pen.
Step 2: With right sides facing, position the a blue square on the top right hand corner of each of the eight white 2 1/2" squares, ensuring they line up on each raw edge and that the lines are facing in the direction pictured in the above photo.
Step 3: Sew across the drawn lines and trim away the excess corners 1/4" from the sewn line.
Step 4: Press the seams towards the blue triangles.

TIP: your eight squares should still each measure 2 1/2" square when complete.

Next you will need 8 of the blue and white units you made on Day 1:
Step 5: Sew a white 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle to the bottom of each of the eight units from Day 1, along the long sides and pressing the seams towards the white rectangles to yield eight squares which should each measure 2 1/2" square when complete.
PLEASE NOTE: You will need to make four of each of the units pictured. Please take note of the orientation of the blue squares, prior to pinning and sewing. Four are positioned at the top right of the white rectangle and four are positioned at the top left of the white rectangle.
Step 6: Sew a white/blue square made at Step 4 to the top of each of the eight units, as pictured, along the long sides and pressing seams towards the white squares to yield eight units which should each measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" when complete.
PLEASE NOTE: You will need to make four of each of the units pictured. Please take note of the orientation of the blue triangles, prior to pinning and sewing. Four are positioned at the top right, corresponding with the blue squares and four are positioned at the top left, also corresponding with the blue squares.
Step 7: Divide the units into four sets of two units.  Each set must contain one left and one right facing unit with the triangles and squares facing toward the centre, as shown in the above photo.
Step 8: Sew a blue 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip to each of the left hand units of each set, along the long sides and pressing the seams towards the blue strips.
Step 9: Sew the remaining right hand units to the blue strips, along the long sides and pressing the seams towards the blue strips to yield four units which should each measure 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" when complete.
You will need four of the strips you made on Day 2 (as pictured) to complete the next step.
Step 10: Carefully matching all seams, sew a strip from Day 2 to the top of each unit, along the long sides and pressing seams towards the strips to yield four blocks which should each measure 5 1/2" square when complete.
And that's it for today. Well done, you are nailing this :)
Any ideas yet what we are sewing yet? No? But you are getting closer to finding out :)
OK, here's today's "Homework Assignment":
Its a nice and simple one today so hopefully you have the time to complete it before tomorrows post. Regarding the binding fabric, if you haven't chosen already there's still plenty of time. I chose a navy fabric for mine and it frames it perfectly :)
The last two installments may be posted a little later in the morning than usual because it will be the weekend and I've earned a sleep in or two (YAY!). I've had a huge week sharing this project with you, working on other upcoming projects and my poor dad (age 72) had his first ever surgery this week as well; a very stressful and worrying time for us but it all went better than we could hope for :).
Until tomorrow my busy bunch of sewers :)

  1. Hi Rose, I bought two of your fabulous patterns just in the past week. I'm the one who made the barn quilt from your Enigma pattern. I've never tried a mystery quilt before but since I love your color choices and designs so much I decided to give it a try. This is so fun!
I'm loving this and can't wait to see how this turns out.
    Thank you. Suzanne
