Mini quilts may be small in size, but they're super fun to sew! They're a fast finish with less commitment, and every month I add a new design to my pattern family to tempt you!
It's time for me to add a new mini quilt to my pattern family, and this month it's the gorgeous Opal. Isn't she pretty? She's my new favorite, but I guess I say that about every mini quilt! :)
A precious opal has a pseudoachromatic optical effect with flashes of coloured light from certain minerals, as they are turned in white light. My grandma had the prettiest opal pendant and as a child I was quite entranced by all the gorgeous colour in such a small stone. The glints of blues, greens and pink/oranges were fascinating to me and it's probably why it's such a popular stone.
The fabric combination and the shapes of this mini quilt reminded me of her pendant, and that's how she got her name.
Opal is a paper pieced mini quilt pattern finishing at around 14" square. There are a lot of sections to join in this pattern, but the sections are manageable and not too tricky. If you need a little help you can find my tips and tricks for joining FPP sections etc. HERE.
The PDF pattern includes full sized templates and I've included shaded colours of the fabrics I used to help you with your fabric placement - you can disregard this and write in your own colours, but this helps with what fabric goes where!
I used a mix of Bonnie and Camille fabrics for my quilt and I wasn't sure the fabrics were working in the beginning, but I was pleased with the end result. That stunning aqua really makes this design pop and I think it was the main reason I kept thinking of my grandma's pendant.
The Opal is said to boost one's creativity and inspire originality, and the energies of this stone will encourage you to express your true self. Get creative and sew Opal in fabrics that make you happy.
I have included a colouring sheet in the PDF pattern to help you choose your fabrics/colours prior to committing to sew, and I think Opal would look stunning in any combination. I can't wait to see which fabrics you choose!
The PDF pattern also includes step by step instructions and diagrams to make piecing your mini quilt quick and easy, and I've also included optional instructions for adding a hanging sleeve or corner hangers so you can display your quilt on your mini wall.
Opal does have quite a few sections to paper piece and join, but you can still construct your mini quilt in a weekend. That's the appeal of these little quilts - less commitment, less time, lots of instant satisfaction!
