Calendar Girls - A Casual Block Sew Along!

Do you want to sew the quilt blocks featured in my free 2023 Calendar? Come and meet the Calendar Girls and prepare for a very, very casual sew along!

Morning lovely!

If you downloaded my Free 2023 Calendar and thought about sewing the block patterns I featured each month you're in for a treat! Let me introduce Calendar Girls, a very, very casual sew along using all the blocks from the calendar to celebrate a creative 2023!

Starting March 1st, I'll share one block pattern every two weeks and I'll include instructions and cutting requirements or templates (depending on the construction method of the block) for four sizes - 6", 8", 10" & 12" (finished).

So, let's meet the Calendar Girls:

When I brainstormed this idea with my husband, we decided to name the blocks after women from both families who were sadly no longer with us - women who had loved, shaped, nurtured and influenced our lives in unique ways.

These women were strong, talented and amazing, and they all own a piece of our hearts. There's a mum and mother-in-law (Les's mum), grandmothers, great grandmothers, aunts, and great great aunts in this group of special women - we know they'd be thrilled to be a quilting Calendar Girl!

It's an eclectic group of women and blocks and I hope you have fun sewing along with me!

The Calendar Girl blocks are a mix of tradition patchwork, foundation paper piecing, and a bit of applique, and hopefully they will develop your skills along the way.

You're free to do whatever you want with these blocks. Use them in any project or make multiples for a large quilt. The choice is yours and I hope you share with me how you use them.

There will be no fabric requirements listed in the free block patterns, but everything else you need will be included - instructions and diagrams, cutting requirements, templates if necessary and a colouring sheet.

This is a very, very casual sew along and feel free to join in anytime or collect the blocks to keep in your files for when you need them.

If you need any help at all, please send me an email and I'll work with you - I try to make my patterns as clear and concise as I can, but sometimes that doesn't cover everyone's questions or concerns.

I'd love to share any of the blocks you make, so send me photos and I'll put together a post later in the year to share your Calendar Girl blocks.

I'm so excited to begin this sew along and I hope you join me on Wednesday 1st March for the first block.

Let's meet our January Calendar Girl shall we?

Our first block is the loyal and true Ruby

She's a traditionally pieced quilt block and she's playful, fun and perfect in any colour combination.

She enjoys knitting, lawn bowls, baking and living the quiet country life. What you see is what you get with our lovely Ruby. She's honest and true and a loyal friend who opens her heart and home to all she meets, with a cheerful smile and a warm pot of tea!

Ruby was my great grandmother!

The fun begins next week! Grab your fabrics and let's sew some Calendar Girl blocks together!

  2. I receive your emails, but, I want to make sure that I also get your Calendar Girls block patterns. I couldn’t see anywhere to sign up to receive the patterns. Is there anything extra I need to do to make sure I get the patterns? I am really looking forward to making these blocks. Thanks.

    1. There's no sign-ups, its a very casual sew along! Blocks will be released every second Wednesday starting March 1st. I will provide the links again in the monthly email - this is usually a recap of all the posts I've shared that month. You can sign up to someone like Feedly and follow my blog (Bloglovin no longer exists I believe). Hope that helps! Rose

  3. What a wonderful, fun idea. Naming the blocks after family women? Also a wonderful idea. I'm thinking of the women in my life as well. This will fun ... if not for the blocks... for the memories. Thank you for sharing!!!

  4. I’m looking forward to making these lovely blocks. There are some I don’t think I have seen before! I started to think about what fabric I would use to make the blocks, and wondered if you had any calculations of the amount of fabric we would need for the different sizes of blocks. I have a few layer cakes I am considering, with each one having a yard and a half of one of the fabrics in the line, and I’m wondering if you thought that could work. Thanks so much for these free patterns. ❣️

    1. No, as I said in the blog post, I won't be giving fabric requirements for these blocks. It all gets too messy with different sizes and how many blocks people plan to make. Everything else you need will be included in the free pattern :)

  5. Sorry I missed your statement (that I now notice is even in bold letters!). I think I was distracted by the beautiful blocks!🫢

    1. I love that you love the blocks :) It can become very messy with fabric requirements. Some readers might want to make them super scrappy where others might like the monochrome look! Hopefully everything is clear enough in the patterns so you can determine if you have enough of the fabrics you want to use, as we go along :)
