Adding a small handmade item to your Christmas cards each year is fun and thoughtful. This year I'm adding some Crochet Christmas Stars using a free pattern from Merino and Tomatoes.
It might seem old fashioned or outdated, but I still send out Christmas Cards to family and friends. The gentle art of writing on cards invokes the spirit of the season, and it's a thoughtful touch that shows people your thinking of them and you care.
Every year I add a small gift to my cards, and I switch it up each year. I've sent Fabric Stars, Matchbook Needle Keepers, Snowflakes, bookmarks and little prints, but this year I'm sending crochet Christmas Stars.
I used the free Little Star Crochet Pattern from Merino and Tomatoes, and they are quick, easy and utterly delightful. I'll also share some more free patterns towards the end of the post to inspire you.
Each Christmas Star take around twenty minutes to crochet and once you're familiar with the pattern you'll breeze through a pile of them in no time. I've been working on them a night and it's a great wind down project after a busy day, plus quick progress is a satisfying dopamine hit.
They're a fantastic yarn buster, so grab your stash and crochet them in different colours, different yarn plys and use those small balls of yarn left over from other projects.
Your stars will vary in size depending on the yarn you use, but as they're being gifted individually, you don't have to worry about inconsistent sizing - unless you're making a garland etc.
You can add a hanger by crocheting a single crochet loop to your desired length or add some ribbon or twine - I haven't decided what to add to my stars just yet - and your friends and family can hang their star on the family tree.
You could also crochet a long strand of single crochet and make garlands or use them to applique Christmas projects. Tied on your gift boxes adds a special touch or scatter them around your home with your Christmas decor to add something sweet and homemade.
Many years ago, when my mother-in-law required extra help, I would fill a basket with homemade items for Christmas and her cleaner, nurses, gardener, hairdresser etc. could choose a little gift as a thank you from her. It's a lovely touch that required very little effort and a simple token of our appreciation. These Christmas Stars would be the perfect way to thank those people in your life who contribute so much yet take so little.
I loved the Little Star Crochet Pattern but there are so many other free patterns available for you to crochet.
I thought I'd share a list of some of my other favorite Christmas Star patterns so you can make something different or make a collection of all of them:
I'm having so much fun working on these crochet Christmas Stars and I'm sure everyone's going to love their card and small gift this year.
If you want to let people know you're thinking of them during the festive season, then I hope I've given you some inspiration to crochet some pretty Christmas Stars to brighten their tree.
Have fun!
