7 Day Mystery Sew Along- Day 3

Good morning and welcome to Day 3 of my Mystery Sew Along. I'm so glad you are enjoying yourself so far. I would like to personally answer your comments but many of you are "no reply" commentors, so I cant. It makes me feel rude so let me say thank you here instead.
OK we have some sewing to do, so lets get straight into it and have some fun :).
I gave you the cutting requirements for today's sewing in yesterdays Homework Assignment but if you didn't have time, then here's a recap:
From your white fabric cut:

  • 1 x 1 1/2" x 11" strip
  • 1 x 2 1/2" x 7" strip
  • 8 x 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
From your blue fabric cut:

  • 1 x 2 1/2" x 11" strip
  • 1 x 1 1/2" x 7" strip
Lets sew!
We are working with the 11" blue and white strips first today.
Step 1: Sew the blue 2 1/2" x 11" strip to one long side of the white 1 1/2" x 11" strip, pressing the seam towards the blue strip to yield one rectangle which should measure 3 1/2" x 11" when complete.

TIP: for a nice crisp seam, set your seam first by pressing with a hot iron and then finger press along the length of the seam, opening it in the direction you want to press, before pressing flat with your iron.
Step 2: Trim and square up one end of the rectangle and then cross cut units at 2 1/2" intervals. You will need to cut 4 of these units and each unit should measure 2 1/2" x 3 1/2".

TIP: Line up the centre seam of the rectangle with any marking on your ruler to ensure your cut units are squared up and accurate.
Next we are working with the 7" blue and white strips.
Step 3: Sew a white 2 1/2" x 7" strip to one long side of the blue 1 1/2" x 7" strip, pressing the seam towards the blue strip to yield one rectangle which should measure 3 1/2" x 7" when complete.

TIP: for a nice crisp seam, set your seam first by pressing with a hot iron and then finger press along the length of the seam, opening in the direction you want to press, before pressing flat with your iron.
Step 4: Trim and square up one end of the rectangle and then cross cut units at 1 1/2" intervals. You will need to cut 4 of these units and each unit should measure 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".

TIP: Line up the centre seam of the rectangle with any marking on your ruler to ensure your cut units are squared up and accurate.
Step 5: Carefully matching the seams and ensuring you have correct orientation, sew one of these units to the bottom of each of the four units made at Step 2, along the long sides and pressing the seams open to yield four squares which should each should measure 3 1/2" square when complete.
Step 6: Sew a white 2 1/2" x 3 1/2 rectangle to the left hand side of each of the four squares made at Step 5, along the long sides and pressing seams towards the squares. Each unit should measure 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" when complete.
You will need to use the 4 x four patch squares we made on Day 1 for the following step.
Step 7: Sew a white 2 1/2" x 3 1/2 rectangle to the right hand side of each of the 4 four patch squares made on Day 1, along one short side and pressing seams towards the squares. Each unit should  measure 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" when complete.

TIP: your four patches must be sewn in the orientation as pictured above, so the blue squares run diagonally toward the white rectangle.
Step 8: Carefully matching the seams and ensuring correct orientation, sew one of these units to the top of each of the four units made at Step 6, along the long sides and pressing the seams open to yield four squares which should each measure 5 1/2" square when complete.

And that's it for today! YAY! Pop your completed blocks into a ziplock bag marked Day 3 and feel proud of what you have achieved today.
Is it still a mystery so far? If you know what we are sewing, please don't tell me and burst my "I can keep a secret" bubble ;) Let me delude myself just a little longer.
Lastly, here's your "Homework Assignment" due tomorrow:
I will recap them again in tomorrows post if you haven't been able to find the time throughout the day.
That's it for me today, clever peeps.
Cya tomorrow :)

  3. Hi Rose, I bought two of your fabulous patterns just in the past week. I'm the one who made the barn quilt from your Enigma pattrrn. I've never tried a mystery quilt before but since I love your color choices and designs so much I decided to give it a try. This is so fun!
Can't wait to see how this turns out!
    Thank you. Suzanne

    1. Barbara if you look at the post 7 Day Mystery Sew Along - Day One, we made four 4 Patch Units from the cut strips. Maybe you didn't scroll to the end of the post. These are the ones you need on Day 3. :)
