7 Day Mystery Sew Along- Day 4

Good morning sewers, its Day 4 of my Mystery Sew Along. Today's another quick sewing day and you will be one step closer to solving the mystery :)
Yesterdays "Homework Assignment" was the cutting requirements for Day 4 but if you didn't have time, here's a recap:
From your white fabric cut:

  • 4 x 4 1/2" squares
  • 4 x 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
  • 1 x 4 1/2" x 7" strip
From your blue fabric cut:

  • 4 x 1 1/2" squares
  • 1 x 1 1/2" x 7" strip
Lets sew, and we are starting off with some quick corners:
Step 1: On the wrong side of each of the four blue 1 1/2" squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner using a pencil or fine tipped pen.
Step 2: With right sides facing, position the a blue square on the bottom right hand corner of each of the four white 4 1/2" squares, ensuring they line up on each raw edge and that the lines are facing in the direction pictured in the above photo.
Step 3: Sew across the drawn lines and trim away the excess corners 1/4" from the sewn line.
Step 4: Press the seams towards the blue triangles.

TIP: your four squares should still each measure 4 1/2" square when complete.
Step 5: Sew a white 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip to the right hand side of each of the four squares made at Step 4, along the long side and pressing the seams towards the square, to yield four units which should measure 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" when complete.

TIP: For correct placement, ensure the blue triangle is positioned in the bottom right hand corner (as shown in the photo) before pinning and sewing.
Step 6: Sew the white 4 1/2" x 7" strip to one long side of the blue 1 1/2" x 7" strip, pressing seam towards the blue strip to yield one rectangle which should measure 5 1/2" x 7" when complete.

TIP: for a nice crisp seam, set your seam first by pressing with a hot iron and then finger press along the length of the seam, opening it in the direction you want to press, before pressing flat with your iron.
Step 7: Trim and square up one end of the rectangle and then cross cut units at 1 1/2" intervals. You will need to cut 4 of these units and each unit should measure 1 1/2" x 5 1/2".

TIP: Line up the centre seam of the rectangle with any marking on your ruler to ensure your cut units are squared up and accurate.
Step 8: Carefully matching the seams and ensuring correction orientation, sew one of these units to the bottom of each of the four units made at Step 5, along the long sides and pressing the seams open to yield four squares which should each measure 5 1/2" square when complete.

And that's it for today. Pop your sewn blocks into a ziplock bag marked Day 4 and pat yourself on the back. Good job!
And here's your next "Homework Assignment" due tomorrow:
If you don't have a chance to do your cutting, I'll post a recap on tomorrows post.
I hope you enjoying this project so far. There are so many wonderful free patterns floating around the internet at the moment. You can find some great one at FaveQuilts and AllFreeSewing. I spent ages on these sites last night and they really do inspire and motivate.
Cya tomorrow :)

  1. Rose, Thank you so much for this mystery. My grand-kids are doing it with me and they are so excited to do the next lesson (ages 13 (boy) and twins 10 (boy and girl) they are doing all the measuring cutting, sewing and pressing. We are not able to do it every night so just doing it when they come over. My grandson said, "Nana you can't look at the directions until we are here, we don't want you to see what the quilt looks like before we do. Your directions are very easy to follow so they are able to figure it out on their own. It is very nice to see them get so excited about quilting. Again thank you for putting this mystery together and making it something I can do with my grand-kids.

  2. Hi Rose, thanyou so much for The mystery quilt, really enjoying it & your instructions are clear & precise. Have got a little behind as our 2nd grandson Harvey Felix arrived yesterday afternoon 3 weeks early. All is well & we can't wait to go to Canberra to have cuddles with Harvey & Cormac his 2 year old brother. Today back to creating the next steps of the mystery.:-)
