{Free Pattern- Coming Soon!} Christmas Quilt - The Fabric

Christmas is more than battling the crowds looking for the perfect gift. It's magical and exciting and you can feel it pulsing in the air. Be present, be a kid again, and be in awe of the sights, sounds, and smells of this wonderful season!

A few weeks ago, I asked my newsletter subscribers for some input on a Christmas Quilt we can all sew together. Without question, trees and stars where the most popular themes selected, so I've designed a quilt incorporating both of them, and I've added a little applique which will be optional but super cute.

I finally got all the math sorted out and today I'm sewing the test blocks, so I thought I'd share the fabric I'm using and a little about how I'll be running this free pattern/sew along.

I choose the cutest fabrics! These are Santa Claus Lane fabrics from Melissa at Polka Dot Chair. Novelty prints are not usually my thing, but this year we'll have a new grandbaby and Christmas just notched up to a whole new level of excitement.

I loved the colours in the range - there's the traditional green and red, but also the most adorable pinks, blues, mints and whites.

The prints are adorable, and I think it was the dancing Santa's that sold me on this range, no maybe it was the pin stripes or the candy canes - I'm not sure, they're all adorable! ;)

I purchased a fat quarter bundle with 24 prints and if I need to add more, I'll pick fabrics from my stash that work. I'm still working on all the fabric requirements and pattern writing etc., but I'll let you know very soon what you'll need to make your own quilt.

It seems everyone wanted a sew along for this pattern, so we'll work on the quilt in instalments and I'll include tutorials, tips and options along the way.

We have new traditions to make as a family this year, but the Christmas Tree has always been the centre piece of our celebrations. The trees I've designed for this quilt are full and lush and easily pieced using traditional methods. I'm using Lemoyne Stars as an alternate block, but no fear - no inset seams to fiddle with, we're doing it the cheats way!

I can't wait to make a Christmas quilt with you guys!  I'll start posting regular updates with all the details during October/November, and I'll include everything you need to make it easy. I'm exciting and I hope we have a whole lot of fun!

Happy quilting :)

  3. I can't wait! I love your patterns so much! Will we get to see a picture so that we can choose fabric in other ways? I'm thinking about throwing some blue and silver in there.

    1. Thank you Sherri! My plan is during the first week I'll share the whole design and fabric requirements, so you can get organised before it begins. This design is pretty scrappy so you'll be able to add whatever colours suit your theme or home :) A blue/silver combo sounds amazing :)
