Nothing says I love you more than a heart shaped diamond, so why not try sewing one of your own using my new Marquise Mini Quilt pattern?
You know I'm a hopeless romantic right? I couldn't let Valentine's Day come and go without releasing a new pattern to celebrate, so today let me introduce you to the very sweet Marquise.
Marquise is a quick and easy foundation paper pieced mini quilt pattern, and she finishes around 12" square making her perfect to use under a vase of flowers, or some scented candles, or as a little quilt to decorate your favorite space.
She's a great scrappy project and you can sew the Marquise mini quilt in just a few hours.
Heart shaped diamonds have a long history and they're elegant, feminine, and delicate. It's an ancient cut with royal roots and it's believed that Mary Queen of Scots gave a heart shaped diamond ring to Queen Elizabeth I.
The heart shaped diamond is one of the most romantic cuts. When you consider that a diamond represents love and commitment, then one that is heart shaped only reinforces the symbolism and makes it even more special.
The marquise cut generally refers to an oval diamond, but when I searched for inspiration photos to draft this design, I found a few modern marquise cut heart diamonds rings - I thought it was the perfect name for this mini!
The most important feature in a heart shaped diamond is its symmetry, which makes perfect for a quilt pattern - we all love symmetry! I chose six pink/red fabrics for my Marquise mini quilt, but you can choose more or less depending on the look you're going for.
My fabrics range from the gorgeous burgundy red to a very soft pink (it didn't photograph as well as I'd like), and I was hoping the lighter fabrics would add a bit of sparkle to the diamond.
I've included a colouring sheet in the PDF pattern so have fun playing around with different colour combinations prior to sewing. How lovely would this look in yellows or blues? You could change the colours depending on the occasion or celebration.
The PDF pattern includes full step by step instructions and diagrams, and full sized paper piecing templates, plus optional instructions for adding a hanging sleeve or corner hangers.
It's such a fun mini quilt to sew and is suitable for all FPP levels, but if you need some help with foundation paper piecing I have some tutorials here:
There's lots of information, practice sheets and tips in these posts, but I'm just an email away if you need any help!

I love it! Thank you so much! I've missed your monthly minis.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry! The monthly mini's will be back - last year I took on some new adventures and while they were wonderful, they kept me away from the sewing room :) Enjoy the new pattern :)
