Mini quilts may be small in size, but they're super fun to sew! They're a fast finish with less commitment, and every month I add a new design to my pattern family to tempt you!
Jane Austen gave us some wonderful characters, but Miss Emma Woodhouse would have to be my absolute favorite. She's the most dimensional of Austen's characters - we see her grow and change, and she's a well-rounded character, complete with flaws and endearments.
She's a headstrong, witty and independent protagonist, but she's also a meddler, a dreamer and not as clever as she thinks. She learns from her mistakes and leaves us with an important message - the only person who knows what's best for your life is you!
At the heart of it, this is a story about love and this month's mini quilt pattern encapsulates all the feels and beauty of this classic book. I'm thrilled to welcome the stunning Emma to my pattern family.
Isn't she a beauty? She's a real showstopper and to quote Austen - possesses a "disposition to think a little too well of herself" ;)
I reread Emma back in January and picking up a classic novel is like revisiting an old friend. I've been collecting the Barnes and Noble editions of my favorites, and there's something decadent about snuggling up with a quilt and a leather-bound book - I'm not a Kindle or audiobook person!
Madeline gave me Emma for Christmas and she inscribed her own personal message and favorite quote on the inside cover, which makes the book even more special to me.
Emma is a foundation paper piecing pattern which finishes at around 14" square. She's petite and she's elegant, and just like our beloved leading lady she's a mini quilt to love and treasure.
There's nothing tricky about this design and I think it's suitable for all paper piecing levels. The templates are easy to manage and the whole quilt goes together very quickly - a great weekend project!
If you're new to paper piecing or need a little help, then check out my tutorials here:
There's lots of information and practice sheets in these posts, but if you have any questions or concerns, I'm just an email away and eager to help.
The Emma Mini Quilt PDF pattern includes full sized paper piecing templates, step by step instructions and diagrams, and a colouring sheet so you can plan your colours/fabrics prior to piecing. There are optional instructions for adding a hanging sleeve or corner hangers so you can display your quilt on your mini wall.
There are also fabric suggestions to help you recreate my version but have fun with this one - add fabrics that speak to you, Emma looks good in any combination.
