Winifred Mini Quilt PDF Pattern

Mini quilts may be small in size but they're super fun to sew! They're a fast finish with less commitment and every month I add a new design to my pattern family to tempt you!

Morning lovely!

I have a gorgeous new mini quilt pattern to share with you today and because Halloween is near, I thought we'd have some fun with a spider web design.

This mini quilt is feisty and playful, so can you please welcome Winifred to my pattern family.

Choosing a name for this design was easy. She's named after Winifred (Winnie) Sanderson from the Hocus Pocus movies. The original movie is a must watch for me in October, along with Practical Magic, The Craft and The Witches of Eastwick - there's a bit of a theme there! ;)

Winifred Sanderson is the eldest and most intelligent of the three Sanderson sisters and played by the very talented Bette Midler.

Born in 1637 in Salem, Massachusetts Winifred lived with her two younger sisters Mary and Sarah and all three are sentenced to death for witchcraft by the townsfolk. They return, slightly annoyed and in earnest three hundred years later when Max Dennison lights the black candle. Lead by Winifred the sisters kidnap children and steal their souls in an attempt to stay alive and stop the aging process.

Winifred is a leader but she's also vain, evil, dramatic, sadist and cruel. Her most striking feature is of course her fiery red hair, but her lack of eyebrows and buck teeth make her unforgettable. She's a villain but a villain you can't help but love.

Hocus Pocus was released in 1993 and the sequel in 2022. I enjoy them both, but the original is my favorite.

To bring Winifred to life, I choose bold colours right out of my comfort zone. The purple/green/orange and black colour palette is quintessentially Halloween and I enjoyed working with this combination more than I thought I would.

I'm not an orange person but I do love the tone of this orange and how well it worked with the other fabrics.

Winifred would look stunning in any fabric combination, and she's a fabulous design for any season - mix and match your colours for a different look.

Winifred finishes at around 16" square, and it is a foundation paper pieced pattern. She's an absolute joy to construct and the perfect weekend project for all paper piecing levels.

Knowledge of foundation paper piecing is essential and if you need a little help, you can follow any of my tutorials here:

I'm only an email away if you need some extra help with foundation paper piecing, so contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

The foundation paper piecing templates for Winifred are very easy to piece and she's constructed in easy sections.  The templates are large and quick to piece, and I think all quilting levels will enjoy this project.

Beginners might especially love this mini quilt and if you need some guidance then read my Paper Piecing Tips and Tricks blogpost to help you join the units together.

Otherwise, there's nothing particularly tricky about the Winifred Mini Quilt. She goes together beautifully, and I've included coloured diagrams to help your construct your quilt with confidence.

The Winifred Mini Quilt PDF Pattern includes step by step assembly instructions and full-sized templates so you can print and sew without any fuss.

There's also a colouring sheet to help you plan your fabrics/colours prior to piecing your mini quilt, and optional instructions for adding a hanging sleeve or corner hangers to display your quilt on your mini wall.

I've also included any tips I feel are useful for constructing this mini, and I've been generous when calculating fabric requirements so you can sew with peace of mind.

Winifred was an absolute delight to produce, and she's a stunning quilt to use this Halloween season.
