{Free Block Pattern} Tree Farm - One Block Three Ways

After thirty-four years we decided that this was the year to buy a new Christmas tree.  Hubby and I brought one when we first started dating, and it's been at the centre of our family celebrations ever since.

I'm excited to set the new one up on December 1st, but it was hard to choose just one - they were all so pretty and I couldn't decide whether we wanted a flocked one or a traditional tree. We eventually decided on a Blue Aspen tree and our shopping trip was the inspiration behind my new free block pattern Tree Farm.

Aren't they cute? Tree Farm is the same tree design sewn three different ways, so you'll be able to mix and match the blocks and add them to your Christmas projects.

This set of blocks was so much fun to put together - way more fun than actual tree shopping. I wanted them to work well in a group, but I also wanted each of them to be pretty enough to be used as individual blocks in small projects.

I used 3 Sisters fabrics for these blocks because they're perfect for Christmas projects and the colours are soft and the prints are gorgeous.  I grabbed my scrap bins and picked my favorites to give the blocks that festive feel.

The Tree Farm blocks finish at 6" square and are fully paper pieced. They go together very quickly and two of the designs are paper pieced as one whole unit so there's no sections to join and it makes them suitable for beginner paper piecers (YAY).

The free PDF pattern includes full sized templates for all three blocks and there's also a colouring sheet so you can plan your fabrics/colours for each block prior to sewing (or you can print it for the kids to colour in).

Let's have a quick look at each of the blocks:

The first tree is the Striped Tree and it's made up of four simple strips. It's quick to piece and it's a great way to show off some of your favorite fabrics. If you're new to paper piecing then this is a good block to start with because it goes together nice and easy.

I'm calling the second block my Snow Capped Tree block, and I used a smaller version of this block in my Christmas Mug Rugs pattern.  It's a fun block to piece and you can be as scrappy as you want.

There's nothing too tricky about this block, and it also goes together as one piece making it quick, easy and lots of fun.

And the third block is my Scrappy Tree. This block is paper pieced in five quick sections and you can just throw a whole bunch of scraps fabrics in it to make a colourful and fun block to use in Christmas projects.

You can use these blocks however you want. You could add them to your Christmas quilts, make multiples for table runners, mini quilts, lap quilts or cushions. You could also make the blocks into individual mini quilts to hang on your Christmas Tree or that corner of your house that needs some festive cheer.

Sew them in fabrics to match your Christmas colour scheme or add a traditional touch with some gorgeous Christmas fabrics. They use barely any fabric, so grab your stash bins and play!

I hope you have heaps of fun sewing these little trees for all your Christmas projects. Don't forgot to send me some photos of what you make or use the hashtag #treefarmblocks so I can pop over for a visit.

Happy Christmas sewing :)
